We are Plu con Pla:
Sounds from Colombia’s South Pacific Coast to the world…
From Tumaco, in the Deep pacific Coast of Colombia, Plu con Pla continues to forge a distinct musical path. The group take their name from Plumuda (a spiny fish) con Plátano (plantain), an inexpensive, traditional and ubiquitous dish that’s raised up entire generations in the region.
The group mixes traditional sounds from the Colombian South Pacific with contemporary genres from across the African diaspora - Reggae, Hip-Hop, Bossa Nova, Afrobeat and more. Since 2015, they’ve been creating fusion music and telling stories of resistance on behalf of those without the power to share them - influenced by the power of Tumaco’s culture, rhythms and landscape, narrating its joy and its struggles.
Plu con Pla’s music connects the resistance and resilience of Afro-descendant and indigenous communities in Colombia and the new generations of young people who find in culture an opportunity to exist again and be unfading in memory.
"Many young people who are betting on music haven't had the luxury of references or role models. Any option we can give them to see a different life, a new opportunity, they will embrace with all their souls,” says Harold Tenorio, band leader for Plu con Pla.
The group has performed at festivals from Petronio Álvarez, the largest Afro-descendant cultural gathering in Latin America, to BoMM (Bogotá Market Music) and CirculART in Medellín.
And this year, they’ll release their first full length album: Pura Actitud (A Matter of Attitude) with the support from Manos Visibles and The Warner Music Group / Blavatnik Family Foundation - Social Justice Fund, and thanks to the talents of renowned music producers Ivan Benavides and Tino Herrera Lewis, and Afro-Colombian filmmaker Jhonny Hendrix.
Now, with the support of Warner Music Group's independent distribution firm - ADA Latin - Plu con Pla takes their music to the world, continuing to make visible the hidden brilliance of their culture, their diaspora and the power of Afro-descendant music.
“ ertinent, original and an excellent gateway for new audiences seeking a flavour of the Colombian Pacific.”
- Sounds and Colours
“Although Tumaco faces issues of poverty, it is rare for hunger to be a problem due to both a long tradition of community solidarity and the abundance of the local ecosystem. The group’s name, ‘Plu con Pla’ reflects this dynamic, referring to a tasty local dish available to everyone.
Formed by bassist Harold Tenorio, the group gestated within Fundación Tumac, a one-of-a-kind cultural center, instrument workshop, and music and dance school founded by his parents 50 years ago to address the need to protect and evolve the region’s rich artistic traditions.
Plu con Pla carries forward essential styles such as Bunde and Currulao, which were created by the African diaspora in response to the realities of life in this coastal jungle territory. Plu con Pla brings a mastery of this language and repertoire together with an urgency of exploration and growth, incorporating hard-hitting urban styles such as Hip Hop and Reggae into their expression, and bringing Bass, Drum Set, Keys, and more into the mix. True to their roots, collective process and social justice consciousness is central to both their music and their actions, with lyrics that address hard themes such as racism and civil war, and a continuing commitment to teaching, leading workshops and accompanying the peace process in Colombia.”
